The loft space on the second floor of the artist’s home that houses the retreat is a fully independent suite that can accommodate individuals, working partners, couples and small families. With two decks, the airy open space has a queen sized bed, double futon, a well equipped kitchen, full bath, internet access, air conditioning and a fireplace. Laundry facilities are downstairs and shared with the artist’s family. There is also a hot tub and BBQ for the use of visiting artists and guests are welcome to wonder the gardens and natural areas of the 5 acre property.

Cost
Stays at the Birdhouse cost $500 per week. Guests may also choose to contribute 8-10 hours of labour a week in lieu of residence fees. Work can include gardening, land restoration, and contributing other skills to the improvement of the residence.

Parks and recreation.
Located in the Highlands area of Greater Victoria the retreat has excellent access to the areas extensive trail and park network. Thetis Lake Park, Francis King Park and Mount Work Park are all a walk/short drive away. In addition Eagles Lake Park, a summertime community hub, is five minutes away and offers excellent swimming.

Research
Juan de Fuca branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library is a 30 minute drive.

The nearest grocery, pharmacy and similar amenities are about a ten minute drive away.

Getting here
The retreat is 30 minutes west of Victoria, 35 minutes from Victoria International Airport and 40 minutes from Swartz Bay Ferry terminal. Retreat guests must have their own transportation as the area is not served by public transit. There is a safe bike route into town and the regional cycling trail network, however the hilly terrain and gravel sections of the route mean it is not suitable for all.
